Flash Fiction

Career By Accident

Taking pictures. Like I’d go out to look for butterflies and see a bluebird on a branch and ooh and ahh over it, forgetting I have a camera in my pocket. I was determined today. I had written a story about a cow and I thought if I had a picture of one, it would enhance my story. I wanted the town newspaper to print it. So of course I was looking for a cow. Not easy in a busy neighborhood like mine, so I drove out to the farm areas. I just needed a cow to take a picture of.

I'd almost forgotten how big and green it was outside town. And I quickly found cows! I drove right off the lane onto a grassy place with a fence holding the cows in, I guessed. All I wanted was one, but they were too far away. So, I took the bread out of my groceries and started tossing it toward the cows (It’s all I had, not canned…)

Well! The whole herd came over to see what it was! I was excited! Then scared to death! The whole herd of cows, aiming at me!!! I was in the car in seconds immediately driving into the middle line (thinking the cows may still be looking for me!) I didn’t stop again till was home!

Sitting there defeated, I started doodling a picture of a cow. I had just seen quite a few! By the time I had calmed down, I had a really cute picture of a cow. So, I added it to my story.

The town paper printed my cow! Said they couldn’t fit the story, but loved the cow! And that’s when my career in drawings actually started, and that’s why I say “It was by accident.”
