Eagles hunt fish in 14-syllable lines, born from a northwestern river’s cycle.

Camping by a northwestern USA river, under pine shadows, I watched eagles swoop for fish along the water’s edge, their wings cutting the vast blue sky. This poem, with 14-syllable lines, captures nature’s raw cycle—a companion to ‘Fishes Are Eagles’

Fishes Are Eagles Open in new Window. (E)
A fish I know dreams to soar like an eagle, finds strength in water. Whimsical allegory!

, where fish dream in 8-syllable lines. sparked by the same backcountry moment. One reader pondered the fish’s dreams—how does this cycle shape your view?

The eagles like the fishes, so they swoop down through the air,
While they watch the tasty fishes in the water way down there,
Now, the fishes watch the minnows as they wriggle without care,
And they catch the tasty minnows near the edges of their lair,
Now the eagles see the fishes as they eat the minnow fare,
So, they dive for tasty fish in the water everywhere,
You see the cycle of life in the water and the air,
We will always find it near the edges, everywhere.
