My system to keep my ego and left brain out of the art process.

Watercolor painting of a wasp

My system to keep my ego and left brain out of the art process.

I have a set of tricks to keep my ego and left brain out of the art process.

1. I work on several pieces at one time in a round-robin fashion. When a piece starts to give me trouble, I move on to the next. By the time I return to the troublesome piece, the solution is usually evident.
2. My focus is on craft, not impressing an audience. I continually ask myself, how can I improve on the pieces I made in the previous batch.'
3. If I think the work is getting stale, I set a challenge for myself e.g., working on black paper instead of white, making larger drawings, returning to anatomy studies, drawing nudes from models, drawing a subject I haven't touched upon in a long time...
4. I post finished pieces on FB but am well aware that some of my viewers have a more sophisticated eye than others who will click on anything. And then, I might post a piece which I consider the best in a batch, but is totally ignored by my FB audience. This means nothing. I have my system (see points 1, 2 and 3 above), a system which should allow me to achieve the best I can, and this is all I can hope for.
