Evelyn corners June in the office parking lot, trying to spread juicy gossip.

The Magnetic Pull

Evelyn hurried through the parking lot, looking visibly shaken.

"I can’t believe what I just saw,” my co-worker said as she approached me at my Honda.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” I said as I fiddled with my keys. I was exhausted from a grueling day of copy-editing and just wanted to get home and curl up with a glass of Malbec.

“You know how Marcy broke up with Curtis?”

Did I mention she was a gossip?

“No, I don’t know.”

“June, you don’t keep up with any office scuttlebutt.”

“Scuttlebutt is such a strange word,” I said, trying to go in a different direction.

“Yes, I guess. Well, anyway, they broke up. And I just saw them kissing in the elevator.”

“They made up. So, what’s the problem?”

“He hurt her. He betrayed her. He cheated on her. Played her for a fool. And she’s kissing him in public, as if nothing bad has ever happened. She didn’t even care that I saw.”

This was none of my business, and I just wanted to get home. I put on my analyst’s hat.

“Well, you know, Evelyn, sometimes life nudges you toward someone who will hurt you. It’s a magnetic pull. And that villain becomes the catalyst for significant healing, awakening, and spiritual advancement. Nothing is as black or white as it seems.”

“June, why do you always do that?”

“What? Make sense?”

“No, ruin a good bit of gossip with your psychoanalysis of every juicy morsel.”

My intention exactly. Works every time.

And without another word, Evelyn spun around and stomped off toward her car. I backed my Honda out of the parking lot, heading home toward a warm bath and a glass or two or three of Malbec.
