Keegan takes one more Job.

A day later, Jubal rode down the main street to stop at the Saloon. He knew he shouldn't go inside with the riders from the Fargo Ranch, but he was thirsty and had that I do not give a damn attitude about him. Stepping down, he loosened the six-gun on his right hip before stepping inside. The talk at the table to the right of the door stopped talking at his entrance. One nodded to another and motioned toward the door. They drained their Beers and walked out.

Jubal was not one to start any trouble on a normal basis. But he was not one to side-step it or back down. Those who knew what he could do in a fight, whether it be with his fists or a gun, waited for the explosion to start. They knew one was coming, and it was only a matter of time.
As he stood at the bar sipping his Whiskey, he heard two cowboys talking about Mr. Deeds' beating. That it happened bothered him much. What bothered him more was the two gloating about it and saying Dedds got what he deserved from Cobb. Downing his shot, he turned to them.

"What was that you Peckerwoods were saying?" He didn't know these men, and they for sure did not know him. Jubal stalked down the bar to stop an arm's length away. He waited for one of them to speak.

"We said that Mr. Deeds got what he deserved. What business is it of yours anyway, Mister? We don't know you."

"My name's Jubal, and Deeds is a friend of mine." He threw a right cross to the nearest one's chin. Broke the jaw. The man's eyes rolled back in his head as he fell to the floor. His partner reached for his gun and managed to get it out of the holster before Jubal pistol-whipped him. One hit was all it took to join his partner out cold on the floor.

The Bartender smiled and asked if Jubal wanted one on the house. "Where is Deeds?"

"Down at Doc's. I'm sure he will be able to tell you who did it when he comes around." He stated, wiping out a glass that was already clean and free of dust.

Jubal had started to walk away, but then he turned back. "Which Cobb was it? Not that it matters much one way or the other.

"The Sheriff conveniently said there were no boot prints inside the Livery to show who had done the deed to Mr. Deeds. That stableman said otherwise. There were bootprints all over the place, and the boots that made them were fairly new and the only one around town wearing new boots is Deputy Cobb."

"Interesting. Thanks for the info. I'll mosely along to the Doc's." Jubal strolled out to his horse, stepped into the saddle, and rode down to the Doctor's House. Tied up at the hitching rail and knocked on the door. Waiting only a moment before the Doc's wife and his Nurse opened it. She smiled seeing him.

Holding the door wide open, she stepped aside for him to enter. Jubal took off his hat upon entering. Out of respect more than anything. "How is he, Mary? Will he survive?"

"Go on back to the examination room. He is there full of Laudanum. Though you might be able to talk to him in a couple of hours. I'll let Henry tell you about his injuries." She grabbed his arm as he started for the room. " He might lose one eye, but we will know better when the swelling goes down.

She took a step back as Jubal exclaimed out loud."Cobb's a deadman!" He closed the door behind him.

The man lying in the bed could not be recognized. His face all cut up and bruised. The Doc sat next to him, keeping an eye on his breathing and occasionally checking his pulse. Jubal moved silently up to the bed.

"You needn't be so quiet, Jubal. I don't know if he can hear you or not. Gave him some Laudanum to sleep, which is the best thing for him at this point. I can't do anything more for him. It is in God's hands now." He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"What's his injury? Mary said he might lose an eye."

"Yes, he might. Broken nose, jaw, and cheekbone. I stitched up the cuts. Twenty of them. He'll wear them bruises for a while. Three cracked ribs and at least two broken. Not sure about internal injuries. Only time will tell. Deputy Cobb did a number on him for no Damned reason. I swear I will dance a jig when Cobb is dead."

"He will be when Laredo hears of this. Unless I beat him to it. Neither brother is any good."

"You have a couple of patients when they arrive. I knocked two of them Fargo riders around the Saloon a few minutes ago. Both are lucky I didn't shoot either one. Maybe I should have."

Deeds groaned and moved a bit on the bed, but did not wake up. Both looked in his direction and did not say a word. Mary stuck her head in the door. I have fresh coffee you two."

"Sounds good, Dear." Said the Doc.

"Thanks, Mary." I replied leaving the room in front of the Doc.
