Soy Soup

Liu An’s mother tastes tofu for the first time

It was soft and creamy, this tofu novelty,
seasoned with fermented bean paste,
sticky rice, and gai lan cooked so long
Her teeth received it as soup.

She sat straighter and felt her son
Must love her to offer her this,
As full of energy as meat and as
Light as clouds.
