Everything about writing is ... |
| Writing is rewarding and self-fulfilling, but it's also ... hard. And especially if you're hell-bent on publishing (and marketing) your stories. I'm not just referring to the physical and creative part of that cognitive process. Whether you go the traditional or self-publishing route, it can be richly rewardimg ... OR ... fraught with obstacles. Here's the bare bones (beginning) part of that endeavor: Writing: The part I actually consider the easiest, but it's still no cake walk. Editing: Unless you're an experienced literary editor, this is even more difficult. Although traditional publishers have their own editors, those who self-publish should understand that professional editing is vital for creating a high quality product and reader confidence. Publishing: Traditional or self-publishing? Marketing: Demanding, can be expensive, and the most time consuming part of the entire process (should you choose to self-publish). While writing fosters creative expression, personal satisfaction, and the ability to showcase your talents as an author, it's also hard work, requires a lot of research and homework, and can lead to creative frustration and writer's block. The learning curve regarding self-publishing is high. ISBNs, cover designs, copyrights, book formatting/typesetting, etc., followed by uploading the books via self-publishing platforms all require time, effort, and homework. Every self-publishing service is different, with different rules, policies, procedures, etc ... So ... has it been worth it? Answer: An absolute ... YES ! P.S. Check out my latest post(s) on writing.com regarding two books I recently self-published and uploaded via amazon/kindle. Both are now available in the Amazon Bookstore & Barnes & Noble online. |
