Chapter #9

Amber and the School Trip.

    by: Gimlet Author IconMail Icon
This could be... awkward. I tried to ignore my feelings for this girl... reptile... er... dragon? Gotta focus! Anyway, now the problem was how to make her look human! I didn't have a hat with me, but I did have a scarf. It was a little florid, but wrapped around her head she looked... well... still dirty.

"When was the last time you bathed Amber?" I said, pulling a twig from her hair.

"Bath? What's that?"

OK, that could explain a few things. Curiously though she just smelled musky, not smelly exactly. Odd.

"Well, for the others not to notice you I think you'll have to be clean. That means bathing." She looked quizzically at me. "I mean, bathing is when you use water to get the dirt off you."

"Oooooh, like running in the rain?" I smiled and nodded. "Oh... mom said that was dangerous. I shouldn't go out without company."

I sighed.

"Well, you'll be with me. Will that be OK?" She bit her lip for a second, then smiled and nodded. "Good. Um, is your Mom around?"

Tears started to well in her eyes once more. Dang, I put my foot in it didn't I?

"She... she's gone. I *sniff* put her in the ground a long time ago. I miss her."

"I'm sorry Amber." I said, patting her head. "I guess your father....?" I hated to ask it, but it had to be done.

"Mom said I shouldn't ask about him. Bad things happened." She said, with a cross face.

OK.

"Um, sorry to ask this Amber, but how long ago did... you Mom go away."

"Long time ago. I don't count very well. I... think more than uh... twenty seasons."

I blinked. Wait what?

"How old are you Amber?"

"Um... I guess.... back then Mom said I was thirty. So... what's twenty plus thirty?"

"Fifty." I said, blinking in shock. This little 'girl' was thirty? She looked sixteen and acted like she was nine! "You've been alone since your Mom went?" She nodded. "I'm so sorry Amber. It must have been scary."

I looked down at the scarf in my hands and got down to it. After a few minutes we had it more or less sorted out. My jacket was long and went down below her waist. As long as no-one looked up it or she didn't bend over no-one would know she wasn't wearing trousers or a skirt. With the scarf around her heat her horns were covered pretty well... though her hair was still messy... as was the rest of her.
