The next morning you showed her where the meat was and she noticed what the substance did as far as preserving the meat. She ate just enough and then you went out and let her drink. When she wanted to bath you allowed it but watched her closely and skewered a few fresh water predators as they got too close to her. She thanked you as she saw a large wish and a hippo looking thing but when you brought a croc out that was easily twice her size she decided her bath was over and she didn’t need the hint to go back inside to which you closed the door again. This time you went out on a limb and sat closer to the fire. At first she retracted to the wall but she was a smart girl and probably figured that if you wanted to eat her you would and shivering away from the fire wouldn’t change that. So she sat on a chair of sorts that you picked up a while back and would occasionally look at you as you stared back at her.
“So… umm… can you talk?” she asked as she didn’t want to wait in the uncomfortable silence any longer. You raised your head to this and after a thought of how you should answer you slowly nodded at her. “Then why aren’t you? At least tell me why you brought me here. I can’t tell if I should be thanking you or waiting for you to get hungry.”
“I…” You started and watched as her eyes almost immediately shot to your teeth as you started. “I didn’t want to scare you.” you said and shrunk back a little as you tried to look as nonthreatening as possible, which wasn’t really working.
“Well, I don’t want to sound ungrateful but… why did you bring me here?” she repeated.
“I saw you being sacrificed to the dragon. I didn’t want you to die so I took you instead. I usually don’t do that.” You said in a bashful voice or as much of one that your incredibly deep voice would allow. This new revelation that you intended to save her was a pleasant reprieve but then she noticed your words.
“What do you mean you ‘don’t usually do that’?” she asked.
“Sacrifices to dragons are common. But usually they are criminals or at the very least someone old enough so their spot could be taken. I’d never seen a child on as a sacrifice before. Plus I don’t really like going into human towns. They usually try to kill me and stuff.” You explained.
“Then I guess I should thank you for saving me. Thank you Mr. ...?” after a moment she noticed that you weren’t getting what she was trying to ask. “Do you have a name?” you just shook your head and she saw a twinge of sadness in your eyes from her question. “Mine is Sarah but I can’t go around calling you Dragon so… do you mind if I give you a name?”
“You mean you want to give me a name? I would love that!” you exclaimed but perhaps too loud as she winced at the outburst. You wanted to nuzzle her but when you brought your head forward she got visibly more nervous so you just settled in a neutral position.
“Ok, ok. but I only know human names. Is that ok?” she asked.
“I’m sure whatever name you pick will be perfect.” You replied and she smiled involuntarily at your seemingly childish behavior.
