Chapter #5

Why would you throw that out?!

    by: Dragonien Author IconMail Icon
as he approached the massive, rather ominous looking pair of buildings near the edge of campus, he saw something that caught his eye. On the side of one of the buildings was the trash chute, and a fresh load of trash had just been dumped out. Nothing that would normally catch your attention, unless something stood out. sitting, as if on display, on the top of the piles of soda bottles and wadded up paper was something that reflected the light with a polished hue. Carried by some unknown curiosity (Stereotypers would call it a dragon’s attraction to shiny things) he walked his way around to the side of the building, rather than the entrance, to investigate.

For a brief moment Tyler was scared at what he saw. at first glance he thought it was a gun, though quickly was relieved when he saw it looked more like a toy than anything else. It looked like someone had taken a toy gun and stripped some of the coverings off of it, so some wires and circuit boards inside were exposed, but the parts that did have covering were of some kind of hard, polished plastic.

Again, sheerly out of curiosity he reached out to pick the weird looking gun up, carefully turning it over and inspecting it. the wiring inside looked surprisingly intricate, and the circuits looked to be made for something much more complex than just making space gun noises. as he turned the gun back and forth to look it over, his finger slipped and hit the trigger, which immediately caused Tyler to yelp in surprise and drop the gun, as a bright green beam of light shot out of the end of it.

His eyes went wide as he watched the beam of light smash against the dumpster the gun had been sitting in, seeming to slowly ‘flow’ over it as if some kind of green, etheral coating. when the dumpster was completely encased in that eerie green glow it seemed to pulse slightly then, for lack of better word, ‘suck’ inwards, from all directions. and as it did, the dumpster sucked inwards as well... as it, of all things, shrunk! each small pulse of that green light causing the aura, and the dumpster with it to shrink smaller and smaller. by the time the green glow seemed to fade away, the car sized dumpster had been reduced to the size of a beer cooler.

Tyler simply stared wide eyed for several minutes, looking down at the shrunken dumpster. everything inside it had shrunk as well. the wads of paper that had been as big as his fist were now more like the size of marbles, bags of trash he would have needed both hands to pick up he could probably hold in a single hand.

Slowly he bent down to pick the gun up, being far more careful this time, as he rasied it up to look it over again. carefully he turned it to aim down at the dumpster again, wincing a bit as he pulled the trigger and, again, a flash of green shot from the barrel and once more engulfed the dumpster. within seconds it began pulsing, just like last time, and starting to ‘suck’ inwards, as if its mass were being pulled inside of itself to make it smaller. this time when the effect faded away, the formerly car sized dumpster was now barely the size of a lunch box.

Tyler continued staring for several seconds, mulling over what he was seeing and whether he was being crazy or not... before his lips ever so slowly started to twitch, then curl into a wide, almost cheshire cat worthy grin...

he turned on his heels, and rather than going to the building for that class, he made a B line straight back home... class could wait. if he truly was still sane, he had far more important things to worry about... like his new Shrink ray.
