They were not in positions that you would typically think of as allowing them to become friends, but the local café was within comfortable walking distance of each of their respective places of study and the facilities on each campus had something lacking. For Taylor the problem was the canteen was often chock-a-block with rowdy students who, for her, paid too little attention to the purpose of college and so left her with little space to combine her studies with the basic needs of life. For Angeline the problem was the agricultural college's coffee shop was too expensive, which was a major contradiction in her eyes. For Emily it was simply that it was the only publicly accessible eatery where people were expected to keep their voices down and the tables were adequately spaced apart. For Reese it was a sanctuary from all the male chauvinism the boys at school kept banding about at her expense. For Paula it was the one place she could find any real sense of kindred rather than feel the need to live up to expectations. For Rue it simply was a place of refinement that went beyond the primal atmosphere of the school's refectory. This was how they came to know each other, being the only ones who were yet to be truly considered full-on adults within such a reasonable well-respected establishment. Today something totally out of this world wouldst occur.
"Hey there, girls!" Paula announced as loud as she dared. "How's tricks?"
"I don't know." Rue snarked as Paula sat down. "But I happen to be glad that my exams are over. I can now look forward to a proper lady's environment and master the skills of hairdressing."
"Don't count your chickens." Taylor warned her. "Some people in college still act like they're in high school."
"What ya workin' on, Tale?" Paula asked.
"It happens to be quite a difficult thesis on the relationship between chance and quantum mechanics." She answered. "I've just been cross-referencing with a paper on the concept of parallel universes."
"That's all very well," Angeline stated, "But it ain't gonna put food on ya table. I aim to get a position on a farm and, if I play my cards right, I might even stand to inherit it or, failing that, start up my own."
"Ooh. Will you be working with horses?" Emily asked. "I've been doing pretty well with horses. Or, failing that, cows. I do seem to have a bit of an affinity with ruminants."
"Yeah, sounds real quaint." Reese remarked. "But if any of you find yourselves struggling a bit just give me a call. I'm gonna be a big footy star and they pay bunts for a season's work."
"University professors get large figures on their paychecks, too." Taylor pointed out. "I sincerely hope I can qualify for such a position."
"Well, it so happens that once the summer holidays start I'm going to throw a party for each and every one of us." Paula announced. "I thought I could use a theme to reflect all of our personalities, so I've decided to combine sports, fashion, ponies and space with the classic party look and we're having homemade treats just like you'd find in a farmhouse." She presented a large shopping bag, which balanced precariously close to Taylor's laptop.
"Easy there, girl." Angeline told her. "You've got at least a fortnight before school lets out." Just then...
