The earth calmed. The stones in the chimney transformed to reveal a cache of magical items that would serve Sabrina in her office as Village Seer.
She released the scrolls from their protective covering. Each revealed the secrets of the ages that gave her insights into the coming troubles that would present in ensuing days. She feared them not. It would only be short-lived. Sabrina released the gold netting and bound her hair into a soft cushion that fell just below her shoulders. Her hair would be the source of her foresight and would need to be protected from those seeking to harm her. She next released the bands that would be placed at her wrists and ankles. With these she would manipulate time and objects. The scrolls warned of the misuse of the powers. She would not know what that punishment would be, only that it would be her worst nightmare.
Sabrina pulled the final object from the chimney. A morsel of food for the wolf. Sabrina only intended to push the wolf sideways so that he would fall prostate on the hearth. Instead it removed the magic and he was now circling again with fangs bared. Sabrina tossed the morsel to the wolf who snapped it as if he had not eaten in several days.
The wolf stopped his pacing and did his four-point bow. “Master.”
Sabrina touched the soft spot between his eyes. “You will obey my commands to your last breath.”
“Understood.”
“Quickly, now. We must establish a sanctuary in the village. The fairies must be protected and that cannot happen if the alter remains here.”
“The aerie of the Thunderbird is close. They will bring the Gristalka with them.”
“Those are demon creatures!”
“No. They are not. Their appearance may give that impression. They use their horns for carrying large objects. They use their hands for hunting and gathering. They use their hooves for rapid movement. They are well muscled and large body for battles and the hunt. They do not seek to cause harm, but they will protect themselves.”
“In other words I need the Thunderbirds because I cannot find the Gristalka without them.”
“You are wise, Seer Sabrina.”
“Not yet. I just know that time is short and this must be completed quickly. Call the Thunderbirds.”
The fox stepped forward with some hesitancy. “The Thunderbirds will feast on the fairies.”
Sabrina snapped her face to the wolf to allow him to refute the accusation.
“Yes, Seer, they will have to be bound by your commands. The fairies must hibernate while the Thunderbirds are active.”
“You are to keep no secrets from me. What shall I call thee?”
“Ronan.”
Sabrina looked at her fox. “What be thy name, fox?”
“Fareed.”
Sabrina eyed the fox and knew he did not speak truth.
“Fareed is the name my mother gave me. Others use a different name for me. Please do not address me with those names. They are displeasing to me.”
“Fareed, send a message to the fairies to cover themselves until the Thunderbird and Gristalka have completed their duty. Ronan, go to the land of the Thunderbirds and summon them to this place. Go, now to complete that which you have been tasked to do.”
Sabrina lowered herself on the hearth and arranged her skirts around her.
In time each of the woodland creatures brought a gift of nourishment for Sabrina. She accepted offerings of berries, herbs and acorn cups of water. She did not need these, but acceptance of the offerings would form the bonds needed in the coming days when her leadership would be tested quite consistently.
