“Erin, I think I’ll head south,” you proclaim. “That vegetation will probably be pretty important if humans end up settling here.”
“Alright, I will increase the communications strength,” Erin responds. “That way, we will still be able to communicate through the vegetation.”
“Got it,” you confirm before heading out. As you walk, you admire the scenery on Alpha Centauri. You are already in some light vegetation, and it is green and bright. Peacefully, you continue to walk for an hour, humming a little bit to yourself as you look out at the new planet of which you are the sole inhabitant.
“Human,” Erin’s voice comes over comms after an hour and five minutes of walking. “I have been tracking your position. You are around halfway to the area where I spotted the dense vegetation. How are you doing so far?”
“This is a wonderful view,” you announce. “I’ll take a break now, but I’ll be up and back at it in a few minutes. Thanks for the update!”
“Of course, human!” Erin cheerily states. “I should tell you that I did a more thorough scan of the vegetation out there, and it seems that it is more… interactive than you will be used to.”
“What does that mean?” you ask, slightly worried.
“On some planets outside your solar system, the genes in the vegetation cause it to be more lifelike than Earth’s vegetation,” Erin explains. “In all my history of analyzing vegetation, though, I have not seen any violent or hostile vegetation, but I have seen some… playful vegetation. You never know; you might make some friends out there.”
“Alright, I’ll take that into consideration,” you tell Erin, still slightly unnerved at what she means by ‘playful’. Nevertheless, you get up and continue your journey towards the plants. Around an hour later, you near your destination, and you are met by…
