Chapter #5

D-lightful Donuts

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
"Holy crap these are good." Dakota said as her trepidatious bite was met with a burst of flavor and glaze, "Like really really good. I sort've expected this place to be a Krispy Kreme knockoff but wow!"

Piper and Zack smacked their lips in obvious agreement. Dakota had lucked out and gotten the Boston Crème with the chocolate frosting, a mainstay in the donut world that hat worked its way into her heart on the few occasions she'd been treated to donuts before, that couldn't have been any smaller than a hockey puck and was as big around as her fist. Zack had the Homer Simpson special—a frosted pink donut with sprinkles—and Piper had helped herself to the apple-filled one that sat on top of the dozen, both of similar size to Dakota's. While she'd never been much for sweets, Dakota had to admit that whoever D was, they knew how to make their donuts tasty, and they knew how to make them big.

"Just another reason that you should be happy that you got pulled out of Nowheresville, TX." Piper said with a smile, her lips dotted with apple filling and her cheeks bulging with pastry, "Everyone knows places with great commerce, like our cute little port town here, have the best food."

"Except the Mexican food." Zack added, his right cheek inflated like a chipmunk's, "We don't have good Mexican food."

The donuts were so good, in fact, that Dakota saw no harm in having another one not long after she'd finished her first. She picked up a bear claw, glazed and covered with thick syrupy caramel and sprinkled with nuts. It was just as flaky as the first, but much more gooey than sweet. It had a certain warmth behind it, suggesting that she'd gotten a fresh one. Piper and Zack followed suit as their remaining ten donuts dwindled to seven, then to four, and then down to one measly little glazed donut; ripe for the plucking.

They had spent the better part of an hour at the donut shop, talking and laughing while scarfing down rich, tasty pastries. Despite herself, Dakota had actually eaten far more than she had intended. When she left the house that morning, her measly breakfast of two Eggo waffles had been enough to keep her full. But without really paying attention, Dakota had probably tripled her caloric intake for the day in just an hour...

"One left." Piper punctuated her observation with a smack of her lips, "Ladies, we've managed to pig the entire box."

"Yay." Zack said flatly as he popped the remainder of a cruller into his mouth, "#Murica"

"Pig" was right; Dakota sure felt like one after the realization that she'd eaten three of the richest, gooiest donuts she'd ever had the pleasure of knowing. Sure her friends had eaten just as poorly, and that helped a little to justify her in doing so, but she suddenly felt like all that food was weighing her down. Those donuts were huge!

Dakota almost thanked Piper when she plucked the donut out of the box and claimed it for herself, much to the chagrin of Zack, who's mouth had been watering since he laid eyes on it.

"Hey!" he cried out in great offense, "Who said you get to have the last donut?"

"I did." Piper smirked, her lips dotted in glazed icing, "It's my card, remember? My entry won the contest, so I get the spoils."

"Well, technically you got second." Dakota said with a smile, eliciting a raspberry from Piper, "Way to spread the wealth though, Piper."

"Whatever, do you want it?" Piper gestured the mostly uneaten donut towards Dakota, who shied away, "Then let me enjoy my winnings in peace."

Dakota watched, almost gladly, as Piper chomped away at the rest of the donut. After it had disappeared inside her gullet, Piper suckled on her fingers and gave a refreshed "ahh!" as she leaned back into the booth.

"Y'know...I could maybe go for another donut." Piper said after a moment's thought, "Maybe a malt. You guys wanna stick around? My treat."
