Yu looked between the two giant girls and steadied his nerves. He had gone through so much with these two last year, and trusted them both with his life. He was sure that as soon as they were aware of his situation and where he was, he'd have nothing to fear from them.
Of course, he had to get one of them to see him first, and one prospect seemed significantly more daunting than the other.
Chie looked upon the giant pile of meat and rice she had accumulated from the Junes food court and licked her lips. "Aw yeah! This is just what I need after a day of working on my new kick!"
"It's admirable for you to work so hard, Chie," Yukiko said as she sedately started on her noodles and tofu. "But don't get carried away and forget your summer homework again. It matters more now that we're seniors."
"Yeah, yeah, mmph, I know," Chie waved her off, her mouth already full of food. Yu watched in morbid fascination as his friend tore into the mountain of beef, rice, and sauce of indeterminate origin, and quickly decided that going anywhere near Chie's tray while she was eating was tantamount to particularly creative suicide. He briskly climbed Yukiko's tray, only slightly taller than him in height, and ran to a clear spot between the bowl of noodles and drink.
"YUKIKO! HEY, YUKIKO!" Yu called out to her, waving his arms. "IT'S YU! I'M DOWN HERE!" Unfortunately for him, Yukiko couldn't hear his voice from up there, and she wasn't looking at the tray at all. She was staring in the distance, lost in thought.
"Chie, have you heard from Yu-kun recently?" Yukiko asked, setting down her chopsticks. "I would think he'd come to Inaba at some point during the summer."
"I haven't talked to him since exams started," said Chie, wincing at the accidental reminder to herself of how badly the last school exams had gone for her. "We'll find Yosuke when we're done eating and ask him. If he's shared plans with anyone, it'd be him or..." Chie trailed off, frowning in concern for her friend. "Yukiko, about Yu-kun... you do remember he spent Valentine's Day with Rise-Chan, right?"
"I... of course, Chie!" Yukiko stammered, "Yu-kun and I are just friends. That's... I've accepted that."
Unbeknownst to the two of them, the subject of their delicate conversation had climbed onto the tip of one of Yukiko's chopsticks, hoping to get her attention once she picked them up again, concentrating too hard on his plan to get noticed to follow the conversation above him.
"Yukiko... I'm sorry," Chie said sadly. "I didn't mean to..."
"It's fine, Chie!" Yukiko said with forced brightness, picking up her chopsticks with such a flourish that Yu was almost flicked off of them. "It's just that this is our last summer as high school students, and it wouldn't be the same if we weren't all together. I'd like to see him, that's all!" She was about to dig into her food again, determined to end the awkward conversation, when she thought she noticed something strange on the end of her chopsticks.
Yu's heart raced in anticipation and nervousness as Yukiko brought him closer to her face. He held on to the faux-wood stick, as thick to him as a large tree, for dear life as he soon found himself in front of one of his dear friend's gigantic eyes, narrowing slightly as it tried to focus on the tiny thing in front of it. He waved one of his arms again. "YUKIKO! I NEED YOUR HELP!"
The eye widened.
