Elliot stood before the long, tall bulletin board that hung in the main hallway of his middle school. Dozens and dozens of colorful pages were pinned to the board. It was only a couple of weeks into the school year. Clubs and sports teams were advertising to students at Sunnyland Middle School to join.
The boy glanced through the fliers. He ignored any for the school’s sports teams. Elliot was not interested at all in sports. And really he was just there to find some way to spend a couple of hours after school. His mother recently took on a second job. With his father already working the evening shifts at his job, this meant that Elliot would be left home alone until early evening. Neither his mother nor his father wanted to leave Elliot by himself. And a babysitter was too expensive of an option, hence his search for an after-school club to join.
“Anime club? Eh…Chess club? No! Cute Animal Pictures Appreciation Society? No thanks,” Elliot mumbled to himself as he read through the pages on the bulletin board.
Elliot then noticed a flier that was almost entirely covered by others stapled over it. He carefully peeled back the pages to reveal a bizarre message. It was a stick figure with an arrow next to it pointing to another stick figure, but the latter’s normally stickly middle was replaced by a huge oval.
“Room 399 - Tuesday - 3pm” is all that it said.

“See! I told you someone would show up!”
Room 399 was Mrs. Janestone’s classroom located in a far back corner of Sunnylane Middle School. But she retired last year. Budgetary fights left her position vacant for the school year, so no teacher was assigned to that classroom. So it was a surprise to Elliot to see four other students hanging around after school on Tuesday.
“Umm…hi? I guess I saw your flier and…Umm…figured I see what this is…” Elliot said nervously as he slowly walked into the room.
A frail boy much shorter than him with pale skin and a mop of blonde hair dashed up to the front of the room. He quietly closed the door behind Elliot, slid down the shade to the door’s narrow window, and locked the door behind him. “Welcome to the, uh, Weight Gain Club! I’m Nathan!”
“Stupid name…” muttered a boy. He was tanned, skinny with carefully trimmed blonde hair and a fair bit of muscle on him.
“You wanted to call it the Biggums Society, idiot!” spat the boy right next to him…who looked identical to him.
“I thought he said ‘Big Tums Society…” said a girl. She had slightly olive skin with brown hair that went to her shoulders. The girl was average sized but Elliot could tell she had a little extra weight around her thighs and rear.
“...Weight Gain Club? What even…” Elliot began.
“Let’s just go ahead and start the meeting, okay?” Nathan announced. “I doubt we will get any more people showing up…” The four other students grabbed chairs and dragged them towards the front of the room. Elliot cautiously took a seat to Nathan’s right.
“So…uh…this Club is kinda sorta dedicated to…umm…focused on…erm…” began Nathan.
“Getting fat,” one of the twins stated.
“Or helping others get fat!” the other twin barked at his brother.
“Oh…I guess that explains the drawing then…” Elliot said.
“Yeah! So uh, let’s introduce ourselves! I mean, most of us know each other already…but since this is…uh, what’s your name?” Nathan asked.
“Elliot.”
“Yeah! Let’s introduce ourselves to Elliot! I’m Nathan, but I think I already said that. I’m sort of the…president of the club?”
“Aiden,” said a twin.
“Alex.” The other.
“Katie. Nice to meet you!” said the girl.
“Uh, hi everyone. Umm…for a Weight Gain Club, you all seem kinda…skinny…” Elliot said bashfully, pointing out the elephant in the room.
The four nervously looked away from Elliot. The room was filled with an awkward silence.
“I mean, I tried!” Katie said. “Last summer, I gained 36 pounds! But my mom forced me on a diet so….But I really liked it! My butt was all big and soft! I hope to get to be at least 350 pounds one day once I move out.”
“I have been trying for a while but…stupid metabolism…” groaned Nathan. “But one day soon, I’ll get fat! I mean, my older brother and dad are pretty big! It’ll be my time one day! I’m thinking…500 pounds!”
“And uh…I can’t really get fat until after college. I need the sports scholarships…but the moment I graduate, I’m thinking I’ll get to 800 pounds! Minimum!” said Aiden.
“Same. I need to scholarship too. And I’ll be there to make sure your fat butt is fed well and taken care of!” Alex said, patting his brother’s flat midsection proudly. “I’ll probably let go at that point too, but no bigger than 400 pounds. One of us has to stay mobile!”
“So, Elliot, have you thought about getting fat?” Nathan asked.
“Uh, no.” Another awkward silence. “I mean, I haven’t really thought about it before. I was a bit chunkier when I was younger, and I really didn’t mind that. I like eating, I guess. And candy too. But I’ve never got fat or really thought about getting fat…It doesn’t seem that bad, I guess…”
Nathan smiled. “Maybe our first order of business for the Weight Gain Club is to show Elliot here that being fat is pretty nice, huh?” The others nodded.
Elliot gave a nervous smile, unsure of what exactly his new friends had in mind.
