Before the girls could think of anything else to do with tiny Daniel, in front of them the door to the room swung open and in walked Kristen, nonchalantly. Katie, not realizing that Kristen had returned home during their game of “dress up” with Daniel, wasn’t quite prepared to hide Daniel if someone walked in the room. Although she did quickly clasp her hands around him, Kristen had already caught a glimpse of what the girls were so intently staring at when she walked in the door.
“What was that?” Kristen questioned her younger sibling. She felt that it obviously was something she wasn’t supposed to have or she wouldn’t have hidden it so fast.
“Nothing!” Katie replied. This only furthered Kristen’s suspicions, of course, so she walked up closer to her younger sister, on the floor in front of her and crossed her arms.
“Don’t be a Smart Ass! Open your hands and show me what you have in there!” Every one was startled, including little Daniel, by her choice of words and tone of voice. Kristen hadn’t had an easy day at school, and work wasn’t any better. She wasn’t going to put up with any nonsense from her little sister as soon as she got home. It was an odd tone for her to take with anyone, but she had already had enough! She didn’t even care that they had company over either.
Katie was so startled that she forgot about the possible consequences of showing April’s teeny Daniel to her own big sister Kristen. She opened her hands up and held him up for her angry older sister to see, and the reaction that Kristen had was probably what anyone would expect…
GASP! “What in the WORLD! It’s a tiny little boy…!??” Kristen was speechless after that.
“It’s Daniel…” April spoke up and quietly said. “I found him like that this morning, and I brought him over here to play.” April didn’t know what to expect, really. She figured she’d be in trouble once her mommy found out that she’d played with her little brother instead of helping him, and she figured that Kristen would tell.
“DANIEL…!??” Kristen was still quite confused, and very shocked, but she still had the calmness to pick Daniel out of her sister’s hands and hold him up to her own face. Daniel didn’t know what to expect either. He didn’t trust Kristen, ever since she let the older girls harass him when she babysat them, but maybe she would see this as an entirely different situation and get him some kind of help. In any case, her giant, pretty face and large, bugged-out eyes filled his whole vision for the moment, and he could only wait to see what she would do.
