Chapter #7

The Chase

    by: me_duh Author IconMail Icon
Daniel and Isabelle continued to stare at the bushes where the sounds were coming from unable to move. Isabelle grabbed Daniel's hand, just barely stopping herself from leaping into his arms, when a low growl came from the bushes.

Daniel looked at Isabelle's face and new that she was frozen with fear, and when he saw eyes peering out at them from the bushes he tightened his grip on her and began running pulling her along behind him. He couldn't bring himself to look back, he just kept his eyes infront of him at almost pitch black forest as he tried to navigate around trees and various other plants that seemed to be reaching out for them trying to grab them and feed them to whatever was behind.

Isabelle on the other hand couldn't take her eyes off the creature now in pursuit of them. She wasn't exactly sure what it was but she knew that if it ever caught up to them it would kill them instantly, but she couldn't bring herself to look away and run, so she just kept begin dragged along by Daniel. As she peered at the creature in pure terror she realized that this thing could have caught, killed, and eaten both of them in a matter of seconds, but it hadn't. It was holding back, not running its fastest, instead it was playing with them like a cat would a mouse. The chase was infinately better than the catch. This thought only horrified Isabelle further.

Branches from the trees, protruding roots, and dangling vines grabbed at them both, ripping their clothes and cutting into their flesh. Then suddenly a root seemingly rises from the ground purposefully to trip them. They both stumble over each other and stop when they crash into the trunk of a tree in a small clearing. As the creature casually strides into the clearing looking a little disappointed that the chase is over and yet proud of what it has caught, Daniel pulls out a dagger he had packed and stands between Isabelle, who picks up the largest stick she can find, and the creature.
